First T20I between Australia and England: Follow LIVE Score & Updates From Southampton
England won the toss against Australia and elected to bowl first. In the first of Australia's three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) against England at the Utilita Bowl near Southampton, Matthew Short, who has returned from paternity leave, will start the batting. Australia decided not to include Jake Fraser-McGurk, who scored 0 runs, 16 runs, and 0 during their 3-0 victory in Scotland. Instead, Short was scheduled to open with Travis Head.
Mitchell Marsh on Tuesday indicated that Josh Hazlewood had also rejoined the team, while Cooper Connolly had withdrawn after making his debut in Edinburgh. Aaron Hardie, the all-rounder, will be replaced by Xavier Bartlett when sharing the new ball.
More than twenty-four hours before to tossing, England released their playing eleven. Jamie Overton, who is playing as a specialist hitter while he continues his recovery from a back stress fracture, received his first T20I cap. Jacob Bethell and Jordan Cox made their debuts for country.
With Jos Buttler sidelined due to a calf injury, Phil Salt will captain England for the first time and take wicketkeeping duties. Buttler is practicing with the team and hopes to play in the five-game ODI series. "As a kid growing up it would have been a dream to think I'd one day be asked to captain my country and I couldn't be more proud to get this opportunity," Salt wrote in his programme notes.
Australia was sent in by Salt, who also mentioned that the pitch had been covered for an hour due to a strong downpour that had delayed the toss and start by fifteen minutes. Salt suggested that chasing teams typically had more success at the Utilita Bowl. Prior to the coin toss, 1,044 recently installed solar panels were turned on by two youths from Hampshire's academy.
The solar panels were placed as part of the club's partnership with Utilita, an energy company, which is also the venue's new title sponsor. The effort, according to Hampshire's CEO David Mann, highlights the team's dedication to become "the greenest international cricket venue".
