We must better maintain the ball: Stewart Gregg
In Indian Super League opener, Mumbai City FC makes a stunning comeback to draw Mohun Bagan 2-2.
Greg Stewart, a midfielder for Mohun Bagan Super Giants, bemoaned his team's use of the ball during Friday's Indian Super League (ISL) opening 2-2 tie against Mumbai City FC at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan.
The Islanders scored twice in the last 20 minutes to rescue a point, but the Mariners let a 2-0 lead in the first half escape. For the majority of the game, Petr Kratky's team was in control, and their efforts were duly rewarded.
Stewart believed his club made things more difficult for themselves. Stewart was making his Mohun Bagan SG debut against his former team, with whom he won the League Shield in 2022–2023.
"Another letdown. After the game, Stewart gave an exclusive interview to indiansuperleague.com. "We went two goals ahead, but could not win the match." "I believe we handed up too many simple passes. I believe we need to play the easy pass and react to the ball more. I don't always think we played easy passes. We constantly strive to make challenging passes," he continued.
The home team completed 49 fewer passes than the visiting team, and the Islanders' passing accuracy was 86% vs the Mariners' 80%. The influence was discernible in the quantity of tries made on the two objectives. Mariners only had to, but to their credit, scored despite Mumbai City FC's six attempts on the Mohun Bagan SG goal.
Stewart thinks his squad has to get better at controlling the ball, though. "We conceded the goal, and the second was scored by Mumbai City FC." Therefore, in our opinion, we need to handle the ball better," he stated.
I hope we'll correct our errors: Bose Subhasish
Subhasish Bose, the captain of Mohun Bagan SG, expressed optimism about the team's performance in the next games after they gave Mumbai City FC a second chance to steal a point in Kolkata. The left-back played well and stopped Lallianzuala Chhangte from scoring, but he watched as Bipin Singh and then PN Noufal tortured his side from the other flank. With more games under their belt, the defender believes the team will improve.
"I believe that the league still has a long way to go. In the next games, I hope we'll learn from our mistakes, perform well, and maintain clean sheets," he continued. Following the replacement of rookie Alberto Rodriguez, the Mariners let up the equalizer. In addition to playing a strong defensive role for Mohun Bagan SG, the Spaniard also netted the team's second goal. However, Bose thinks that the team's inability to hold on was a collective one and wasn't related to a shift in leadership.
"The setup changes (about Alberto Rodriguez's substitution) when a new player enters the game." Overall, accountability should fall on the team. Mumbai City FC is a talented team, and they performed admirably. "I'm hoping for improved team performance," he remarked.
"Dippendu Biswas is performing well and becoming more self-assured. The team as a whole is behind him. "I hope he performs well in the upcoming matches," he concluded, praising the young player's performance.
