One the first day of the Para powerlifting competition at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena, China's Guo Lingling captivated the applauding crowd by shattering the world record twice to earn her maiden Paralympic gold in the women's up to 45kg event.
Lingling, the current world record holder in the women's up to 41 kg and up to 45 kg categories, performed as predicted on the bench. She started with 113 kg, breaking the Paralympic mark, and then she improved the record twice more, lifting 122 kg and 123 kg to earn the gold.
With a respectable 109 kg, Zoe Newson of Great Britain won the silver, her second Paralympic medal in the same category following the bronze from Rio 2016. The Rio 2016 -41kg and London -40kg champion, Nazmiye Muratli, is ecstatic to have won her first Paralympic medal in the women's -45kg division.
"The atmosphere of the audience is so great, and I feel very excited about setting a world record," said an elated Lingling after her record breaking show.
"The secret is just sticking to powerlifting and being persistent with it.
"If someone would break my Paralympic and world record, it would be fine because it is good for the competition. That means we can make progress."
Degtyarev gets his second
