Bangladesh suffers as a result of Tony de Zorzi's first performance.
The home team went wicketless during the play, putting Bangladesh under pressure in the post-lunch session on Day 1 of the second Test. Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs each contributed more than 100 runs as South Africa, who had taken the lead early in the Test, proceeded to exploit Bangladesh's bowling assault. As the visitors entered the tea break at 205/1, Stubbs struck an undefeated half-century while de Zorzi reached his first Test century.
Once the session started, De Zorzi wasted a review attempting to pull him out, and he quickly brought up his fifty. Stubbs broke the shackles with a boundary through the covers off Hasan Mahmud following a quiet stretch of play during which the run rate dropped. Mahmud hit de Zorzi's outside edge in the same over, but the ball missed the fielder at first slip.
Before both hitters struck a boundary off Mehidy Hasan to raise the century stand, the opener hit his first boundary of the session with a reverse sweep during the drinks break. Following a DRS appeal, Stubbs hit Mehidy for a massive six down the ground. Then, in the very next over, de Zorzi faced Taijul Islam's spin and hit a one over deep midwicket to enter the 90s.
In the penultimate over of the session, the opening batsman lashed Mehidy for another boundary, reaching the milestone with just 146 deliveries, just when it looked like he would have to wait till the last session to get his first century. To salvage anything from the lopsided play of the first day, the host team now needs a successful closing session.
Brief scores: Bangladesh vs. South Africa 205/1 (Tristan Stubbs 65*, Tony de Zorzi 101*).
