New Zealand Vs India

'New Zealand's top batter' Washington Sundar uses a ripper to clear bowl and silence his detractors. Ravindra Rachin

On the first day of the second Test at Pune, New Zealand collapsed from 197 for 3 to be swept out for 259 with a career-best 7 for 59 from Washington Sundar. With a score of 16 for 1, India was out. The half-centuries hit earlier on Thursday by Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra were counterbalanced by the maiden fifer by an Indian spinner at the stadium. Washington, who had only been selected for the team a few days prior, was added to the starting lineup at Kuldeep Yadav's cost. Akash Deep and Shubman Gill replaced Mohammed Siraj and KL Rahul in India's two more alterations to the team that had lost the first Test.

Jasprit Bumrah kept the score close from the other end, while New Zealand got a fast start to their innings with a barrage of boundaries against Akash Deep. But when spin was added in the eighth over, it paid off right away, as R Ashwin caught Tom Latham legbefore with a ball that straightened a bit.

Even though they weren't taking many chances, the hitters found it rather simple to score runs during the first two sessions, when the spinners were mostly in action. The spin trio of Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington worked quickly to make up for the sluggish pitch.

Although they were able to hit the pads many times and smash the bat countless times, the hitters were rarely in danger. Unfortunately, Will Young left when Ashwin's delivery flew past him and touched his glove on his legside. Sarfaraz Khan saw this at short leg and encouraged Rohit Sharma to take the review.

However, Conway and Rachin Ravindra, who carried over his Bengaluru form, made sure the Indian spinners had to put in a lot of effort to get their scalps. Shortly after lunch, Conway launched an attack on Bumrah, hitting a half volley off the pacer to reach his half-century and then hitting the fence twice more in the same over.

In summary, New Zealand leads India 16/1 by 243 runs with 259 (Devon Conway 77, Rachin Ravindra 65; Washington Sundar 7-59, R Ashwin 2-64).
