After India's aspirations of reaching the Women's T20WC quarterfinals are damaged by New Zealand's smashing victory, what action is required on the part of Harmapreet and associates?
Given their dismal run of 10 straight losses going into the game, New Zealand wasn't considered favorites in their Women's T20 World Cup opening on Friday in Dubai, despite their commanding 9-4 record versus India in T20Is. But after crushing championship rival India by 58 runs, the Sophie Devine-led team stopped their run. While the win gave New Zealand some much-needed respite in the death group, it put India's hopes of making the semifinals in jeopardy.
The Indian women's cricket team, led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, has been praised as their finest T20I team. She expressed confidence in the team's ability to overcome the nation's long-standing world title drought. But India did not show up for the match, either with the ball or the bat.
India As Good As knockout
In the Women's T20 World Cup, India was placed in the group of death with the reigning Asian champions Sri Lanka, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Australia, the defending champions. Australia and New Zealand were India's only real threats, but they will fancy their chances against Pakistan, who they have only lost to twice in T20 World Cup history (the last being in 2016) and against three times overall in 15 encounters. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, lost to them in the Women's Asia Cup final in July and have only lost once in World Cup history.
India tried their luck in the World Cup, knowing that New Zealand was coming off a bad run of results, but they were outplayed in every area and ultimately lost badly. Therefore, the only thing separating India from a semifinal qualification spot is Australia if they are successful in defeating Pakistan and Sri Lanka in their Group A matches.
